Lighter fluid is an inexpensive yet readily available flammable liquid. Other than refilling one’s favorite lighter, there are several unusual uses for that clear liquid that doesn’t involve setting it ablaze. Here are some of the more unique uses of this fluid. Always remember that this type of liquid is flammable and can cause serious harm when inhaled or ingested. Keep out of reach of any children and pets at all times.
Buildup of rust occurs on metal items exposed to humid weather. Over time, the rust can harden, making it more difficult to remove the buildup. One way to remove rust from metal items such as faucets and chair legs is to use lighter fluid. Simply pour a small amount over a rag and rub it over the rusty item. To remove any remaining rust and liquid residue, use another clean rag to clean the metal item.
It is fun to chew gum but not when it sticks to one’s clothes or hair. One well-known tip is to freeze the affected item or placing ice. However, this technique is limited to small items. When it comes to hair and larger objects, use a few drops of lighter fluid instead. Apply a very minute amount over the gummy area and wait for a few seconds for the solvent to seep in through the gum. The chemical components within the liquid will slowly decompose the gum, making it easier to remove from the surface. Wipe or comb away the gum as needed then wash as normal to remove any gas residue.
Price tags and labels have a special form of adhesive which tend to remain on items even after the label is pulled off. To remove the sticky residue, rub a small amount of fluid on the surface. This is useful when removing tags off books or new appliances.
Kids love to use crayons. Crayons can unleash a child’s creativity and allows them to learn more about colors. However, toddlers and young kids are unable to distinguish which surfaces should not be used as a sketchpad, leaving vast walls with varying streaks of color. To give parents and homeowners peace of mind when having an overactive child in the house, have some lighter fluid ready. Pour a small amount over a clean rag. Rub the damp cloth over the colored area and watch the colored streaks magically disappear. Wash the wall or surfaces with water and soap to remove any residue.
There are other interesting uses for lighter fluid. As with any hazardous liquid, it is important to keep it away from kids and pets. It should not be inhaled or ingested. All items that come into contact with the liquid should be cleansed of the residue before being used. Also remember that it is a flammable liquid. As such, do not smoke or work near an open flame when applying the liquid.
